Katimavik
- Canada's leading national youth volunteer - service program
- Began in 1977 by Jacques Hébert (nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, 2002), and P. Trudeau
- Youth aged 17 - 21
- 11 Canadian participants from all over the country and one Project Leader live together in each group
- Groups stay together for 9 (long, but incredibly short) months, divided into three trimesters, each
spent in a different province, with a different Project Leader
- Participants work 35 hours a week on volunteer community projects, in addition to participating in
structured learning activities and external volunteer events
- Five focuses for learning: leadership skills, proficiency of both official languages, healthy living,
cultural discovery, and environmental action
- Group living is an intense and rich learning experience (trust me)
- Each participant spends 14 days each trimester with a local billeting family
- 1 155 participants (out of a record 10 000 applicants!) worked for 600 projects in 105 communities
in 2005, donating $9.5 million of labour to the nation's people
- The above symbol uses the Sun and the Earth to represent the Inuit word Katimavik, which means,
"meeting place." The Katimavik program is a place where the leaders of tomorrow, community service,
environmental and social conscience, intellectual and regional differences, and skilled staff meet for
an education in the Canadian reality, beyond textbooks and classrooms. It is an experience of life-long impact.
See Katimavik for more information on the program or to apply.
